The Kerala Swathanthra Malsya Thozhilali Federaton (Kerala Independent Fishworkers Federation) is a unique movement. It is a non-party trade union with community-based organisation, working in the unorganised sector of fisheries.. It is also unique in terms of the issues takes-up. Over the years it has been taking up environmental issues like resource conservation, protection of water bodies, coastal protection etc.

The Federation operates in the State of Kerala,has a 590 km long coastal line, 222 coastal villages,113 inland fishery villages and 10 lakhs fishermen (including families).The Kerala State is known for its rich fishery resource and dense fishing operations. The state contributes 24% of the country's export earnings from marine fisheries.
