Kanyakumari
March . . . .
The National Fish Workers' Forum launched a national level
rally raising the slogan 'Protect
Waters, Protect Life'. Two rallies, one from West
Bengal and the other from Maharashtra converged at Kanyakumari on May 1st
1989. This rally was greeted with much enthusiasm in Kerala
with numerous environmental groups joining in. Some miscreants
favouring the Koodamkulam Atomic Centre infiltrated into the
rally, while getting converged at Kanyakumai and this resulted
in a flare-up. The police opened fire on the demonstrators
and some fish workers suffered bullet injuries. This did not
affect the morale and enthusiasm of the fish workers, who
continued shouting the slogan, 'Protect
Waters, Protect Life'.
